About Us

Brett Rein - School Counselor

Hi there!  I am super excited to be the school counselor at South Lakewood Elementary!  I love working with students and their families.  This is my fifth year in education in various roles.  I have spent time as a Physical and Health Education teacher and a Restorative Justice Coordinator.  I have also chaperoned forty - fifty teenagers all over the US and Canada for four - six weeks each of the past ten summers.  I have a Master's degree in K-12 Physical Education from Montclair State University and a Master's degree in School Counseling from Adams State University.

I am excited to build relationships within the school and the Lakewood community as a whole.  I am passionate about connecting people and bringing people together.  I love learning about what excites people and gets them out of bed in the morning.  This includes building ICAP (Individual Career & Academic Planning) at the elementary level and helping students explore their values.  I also take pride in being a support in times of need by creating a safe, welcoming space and utilizing empathetic listening which allows me to be in the moment with the person who is speaking.  I enjoy working to build and be a part of the school culture, as I will be involved with Student Council, I will be the Employee Wellness Liaison, I will engage with families through the school's social media accounts, and be involved with the School Climate and Culture Committee and Sunshine Committee.  I also value restorative practices and will work with the school to further embed those practices into the school culture. The 2020-2021 school year will present some unique challenges but I look at them as an opportunity for growth.  It is an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, to learn in a new way, and to work together to overcome the obstacles we will inevitably face this year.  We will get through this together with happy thoughts, big smiles, and maximum effort!

Anita Encinias - Social Worker

Hello, Panthers and families! My name is Anita Encinias, Mrs. E, and I am the School Social Worker or also referred to as the Mental Health Provider. I am full time at SLE and work with the general population on Mondays and Wednesdays and in the ASD center program on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

This is my 7th year at SLE and 10th year in the district. Prior to school social work, I worked with high-risk youth in the Juvenile Justus system for 4 1/2 years. I truly believe it takes a village to guide young minds and being mindful of the whole picture, family and community, along with education make kids successful. Building up social-emotional skills makes strong learners in the classroom!

Tessa Henelsmith - Social Emotional Learning Specialist

Hi South Lakewood Elementary Families, I am excited to be joining your community! My previous school experience includes working as a Social/Emotional Learning Specialist and a School Social worker within Jeffco Public Schools. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology and a Master's in Social Work, both from the University of Denver. Go Pioneers!

This is my first year at South Lakewood Elementary. I believe in empowering students and the importance of self-determination.  I aim to provide students with the skills and tools to successfully navigate life's challenges. I strive to listen to understand, and to be understood. I meet students where they are at, and support them to become the best versions of themselves! I am a member of the School Climate and Culture Committee and the Sunshine Committee. I look forward to supporting students and staff members at South Lakewood Elementary!

Description of Roles

Jeffco Counselors are educated in the area of implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that targets the unique needs of the student. This approach includes support around academic, social/emotional, and career planning and is delivered through classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and in an individual setting. Counselors support academic, social/emotional, and career planning and deliver through classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and in an individual setting. Counselors support the development of social emotional learning through implementation of Sources of Strength, completion of Suicide Risk Assessments, Child Protection reports, and crisis recovery. They support career planning through the Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP).

Social Workers generally work with students with more specifically defined academic and/or social/emotional/behavioral needs as identified in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) as determined by the school’s Special Education team. These needs are typically addressed in smaller group settings and/or with individual students.

As Jeffco Social Emotional Learning Specialists, our mission is to create and maintain a positive climate and culture that is inclusive and safe for students, families, and staff. While cultivating and empowering the whole child through tiered, evidence-based implementation of social emotional learning programming in order to empower successful, productive citizens and actualize the Jeffco Generations. Social and emotional learning (SEL) describes a set of competencies and skills that enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges.
