Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
South Lakewood Elementary Panthers ROAR!
- Respect
- Own Your Learning
- Always Safe
- Responsible
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a framework grounded in the belief that all children can learn positive behaviors. Through this framework, we directly teach students about behavior just as we would teach about other subjects like reading or math. The focus of PBIS is prevention.
The PBIS program uses systematic practices to ensure that our students are successful by including teaching behavior expectations, reinforcing students for demonstrating positive behaviors at school and monitoring and correcting (re-teaching) behavior.
At South Lakewood Elementary, we use Panther Paws to reinforce the positive behaviors of individual students and Class Paws to reinforce whole classes. Panther Paws may be turned in for incentives such as entry into a weekly drawing and special privileges in the classroom.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.
Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)
SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.
