English as a Second Language (ESL)
At South Lakewood we celebrate diversity and learn from one another! The school’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program provides support to students who have been identified as having a language other than English in their background. English as a second language teachers and classroom teachers help students develop English proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Support can include weekly collaboration with classroom teachers, coaching sessions, and flexible groups that incorporate native English speakers working on similar skills. The ESL teacher works together with classroom teachers to design instruction, enrichment and interventions that help English language learners meet and exceed rigorous state academic standards.
Each English learner is in a unique place in their development of the language. South Lakewood Elementary considers many factors when designing English language support including:
- ACCESS for ELL results
- State assessments
- Informal observations
- Input from the classroom, teacher, parent and student
South Lakewood Elementary aims to help all English language learners progress in their English language development to reach native-like proficiency while encouraging continued proficiency in a student's first language.
The teachers at South Lakewood Elementary are happy to discuss your child's plan and progress at any time.
Fun Fact: South Lakewood families represent 14 different languages!
